Climate Friendly Waste Management in Marga-Marga (Chile)

Facts

  • Funded within the framework of the International Climate Initiative by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) based on a decision of the German Bundestag.
  • Duration: 10/2008 to 12/2009

Project description

Today, the production of renewable energy as well as the efficient use of resources gain of importance for Chiles growing economy and get in the focus of the policy making process. A waste management strategy considering the recycling of secondary resources and the energetical utilisation of waste fractions saves fossil resources and contributes to climate protection. Especially the abatement of methane emissions caused by the landfilling of untreated waste as well as the production of renewable energy, e.g. by the utilisation of organic waste fraction, reduces the emission of green house gases (GHGs).

Main objective of the project is to introduce a sustainable waste management strategy for the treatment and utilisation of municipal solid waste (MSW). The pilot project at the municipal federation Marga-Marga, Region Valparaíso, Chile will provide capacities for the treatment of about 100,000 t of MSW per year. The planned technology embraces a mechanical-biological treatment and a biogas plant to produce a high-quality soil conditioner and energy. Also, an education and training centre to train experts and decision makers in order to support the technology and know-how transfer to other Chilean regions is planned on-site.

Beside a contribution to climate and resource protection positive effects on the regional added value and on development of new regional markets for secondary resources and renewable energy are expected. In addition, environmental impacts will be reduced by the saving of area for landfilling and prevention of ground water pollution caused by contaminated landfill leachate. The project is exemplary in Chile and is supposed to be replicated in the country as well as all over South-America.
