Biomass-Masterplan for the region „Souss-Massa-Drâa“ (Morocco)

Facts

  • Funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)
  • Duration: September 2008 to August 2009

Project description

In the framework of the GTZ project „Promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency for a sustainable development in Morocco“ (GTZ-PEREN) IfaS is currently developing a biomass-masterplan for the efficient and sustainable use of biomass and organic residues in the region of „Souss-Massa-Drâa“ in southern Morocco.

The masterplan for the region Souss-Massa-Drâa forms part of a national biomass strategy and aims at the identification of regional biomass potentials for the development of a local and environmental friendly energy supply system. The qualitative assessment of different biogenic residues from agriculture, forestry and the industrial sector as well as organic household waste or sewage sludge provides the basis for the identification of the technical and economical biomass potentials of the region. Of course, when developing sustainable energy supply strategies for a region, the sustainable use of water resources and the protection of biodiversity are equally taken into consideration as well as the improvement of living conditions of the local population.

The elaboration of the masterplan should particularly contribute to close regional material cycles, to reduce the dependance on energy imports, to create local jobs and thus to increase the regional added value.
