German Solar Prize plaque 2020 honours the “NEMo” project

Prof. Dr. Peter Heck, managing director of the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS) and Dr. Bernhard Alscher, mayor of the Birkenfeld municipality, are delighted to receive the “German Solar Prize 2020” plaque. The German Solar Prize was created in 1994 by Dr. Hermann Scheer, winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, and is awarded annually by EUROSOLAR e.V. to those players who have rendered outstanding services to the use of renewable energies.

“We are very proud to be one of the pioneering institutions that have been awarded by EUROSOLAR. It shows that our constant commitment as a kind of scout on the way to a zero-emission future is considered outstanding and exemplary for society”, Prof. Heck states.

“With this initiative, we want to give an important impetus to the establishment of electric mobility in the Birkenfeld area or the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park region and hope for a strong response from our citizens,” adds Mayor Dr. Alscher.

The solar prize was awarded for the project “NEMo“, the zero-emission mobility centre at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, in the category “Solar Construction and Urban Development”. This project was an initiative of the IfaS in cooperation with the AöR “Renewable Energies for Birkenfeld” (AöR eEfB) of the Birkenfeld municipality.

The “NEMo” project includes three series of solar carports with a total output of 96 kWp, two rapid charging points and one normal charging point for electric vehicles, as well as a battery storage system with a capacity of 80 kWh for intelligent load management. A further charging point under a solar carport is located at Neubrücke station. Population and guests of the region, students as well as employees of the Environmental Campus can charge their electric vehicles here. The aim of the project is not only to generate electricity in an environmentally friendly way, but also to offer flexible and sustainable mobility in rural areas by creating an intelligent infrastructure.

The extensive measures were financially supported by the Ministry of Environment, Energy, Food and Forestry of Rhineland-Palatinate (MUEEF) and through the EU-funded project LIFE-IP ZENAPA (Zero Emission Nature Protection Areas).
