On 19 August 2026, representatives from the Rhineland-Palatinate Supervisory and Services Directorate (ADD), the Rheinhessen-Nahe-Hunsrück Rural Services Centre (DLR-RHN), the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS), and winegrowers involved in the Bubenheim land consolidation scheme came together for a joint site visit. The focus of the visit was on how land consolidation procedures in viticulture can be adapted to changing farming conditions and the consequences of climate change.

During the site visit as part of the ongoing Bubenheim land consolidation process, participants discussed how improvements to the agricultural structure could be linked even more closely in future to water retention, erosion control and climate adaptation. The following topics were examined in particular:

Further development of the existing drainage strategy through decentralised retention, delayed runoff and infiltration
Taking into account machinery requirements, vine row lengths and plot sizes during reallocation
Development of a site-specific modular toolkit of measures
Design of measures that are integrated with land use and require low maintenance
Use of hydrological modelling to evaluate different planning options

The site visit demonstrated that land consolidation, through its combined planning and design possibilities, offers unique opportunities for the economically viable and climate-adapted development of wine-growing landscapes. The insights gained are to be incorporated into further discussions and planning of land consolidation procedures.
