Complete documentation on the project “Globally Sustainable Municipalities in Saarland” published

Since November 2017, the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS), in cooperation with the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW), has been supporting a total of 13 Saarland municipalities in implementing the 2030 Agenda at the local level and anchoring it in everyday administrative life.

The focus of the efforts is the promotion of sustainable development in accordance with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which all member states of the United Nations adopted in September 2015 with the 2030 Agenda. In addition to consultations on the instruments of sustainability management, specific, economically viable measures were developed within the municipalities in the context of the SDGs.

In a first project phase until the end of 2019, the project received 90% funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and around 5% funding from the Saarland Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (MUV). Finally, further funds were made available by the BMZ for 2020 to support the municipalities in the further continuation of their activities within the framework of a so-called follow-up. The overall documentation summarises the working methods and results of the GNK project in a compact form and illustrates the commitment of the 13 model municipalities by means of selected lighthouse projects.
