Visit to the farm ”Bannmühle”

Within the framework of the Horizon 2020 project AGROMIX and together with the DBU project EvA, the Biomass and Cultural Landscape Development Department of IfaS organised a site visit at the case study farm Bannmühle of Hans Pfeffer in Odernheim am Glan (DE). Bannmühle is an organic farm where livestock and fruit tree production are successfully integrated using a regenerative approach that involves the Keyline design approach. The farm promotes the breeding of Glan cattle, an old breed of cattle risking extinction, for high-quality meat production and it has also integrated orchard with chicken production (150 hen of the Coffee and Cream from the Bioland and Demeter association) and therefore the production of high-quality juice and eggs. Knowledge exchange and experience were shared with the IfaS group especially for what concerns the AGROMIX WP2 on ‘’System Design and Synergies’’. In fact, the obtained information on orchard and poultry production will be valuable for the process of implementation at the German pilot site ‘’Stadtbauernhof Saarbrücken e.V.’’ of a similar system. Moreover, as part of the research project AGROMIX WP5 on ‘’Socio Economic Value Chain and Network Assessment’’, an interview was carried out to analyse the organisational changes made at the farm since the implementation of agroforestry practices and how this has influenced the engagement with different markets and supply chains.
